Maya Custom Manipulator/Locator

By Richard | November 15, 2008

It’s really simple and quick to make your own nodes and plugins using python in Maya!
Here’s my own locator and manipulator, I just modified the existing footPrintManip scripted plugin that comes in the Maya Devkit. Another advantage of a scripted plugin is that you don’t need to recompile it when using in different Maya versions.

The manipulator sets an attribute that you can connect with anything you need, you can also use the channelbox to modify it. When the user stretches too much, it’s locator gets painted to say: “hey, you’re going too far!”

2008 Teaser!

By Richard | October 16, 2008

Hey all! Long time no see!
I’ve been really busy lately - mainly doing nCloth and Maya Hair simulation for work… the blog was a little bit abandoned so I decided to compile some works I did these last months with some cool music from Tekken - my favorite fighting game.

:-)

Did I ever say that I want to work with games?? Well, I’ll try to direct my studies to this goal from now on.

Flock Dog Rig

By Richard | June 7, 2008

Cartoon dog rig I made at the beginning of the year (freelance work) for True Motion Studios! : )

It was challenging because even though I learned 3D in XSI, I’m mainly used to rig in Maya. Also, the client wanted lots of features that I didn’t knew how to replicate back in XSI. Synoptic Views are really fun to make! Learned a lot about synoptic scripting too!
Result: little sleep time and a lot of fun experimental stuff. Some functionality bugs here and there but I’m getting the hang of it! : )

Here’s a little capture of me playing with some facial controls. I’m keeping the rendered animations for my upcoming demo reel!

Maya Python Notes Page

By Richard | April 16, 2008

Hey all, I’m opening a page on this blog dedicated to Maya Python… it will contain notes, mainly tips and tricks to do stuff and to understand how Python works with Maya.

I think it will be more interesting to people who is learning Python and have MELscripting backgroung(my case), since most of the examples we find in the internet are in C++.

If you see anything wrong or want to contribute, feel free to comment or email me! :- )

You can see the page clicking on Maya Python Notes up there in the main menu.

Bender Bending Rodriguez

By Richard | April 1, 2008

Ok, maybe I’m watching too much Futurama…

Bender seemed so simple to model and texture that I gave it a try… and really liked the results! Took about 2 weeks of production in my spare time.
This time the model was rendered using Mental Ray Contour Shader, it is really simple to set up and quite superior to my Planet Express Ship render (that used Paint FX toonshader and Maya Software).

I managed to rig him so it could act like in the TV show, his ‘’ mouth ‘’ has those weird and funny waves, the teeth can be moved so he can drink and smoke, the antena can bend and be pushed, his limbs stretch and the eyes can be deformed as well.
I’m not capturing a demonstration video this time, instead I’m asking someone to animate him, it should be more fun. : )

Modeled in XSI, rigged and rendered in Maya, Bender is soon going to be animated… stay tuned.
